Concerns in the Community

In September 2020, the owners of the Lakeside Golf Club announced their intention to partner with Slokker Homes to redevelop the golf course as a residential community.

A variety of interested parties with differing connections to the course have expressed concern, worry and objection to this plan.

Possible effects of a Redevelopment

Homeowners and Residents

Could golf course redevelopment lead to:

  • Drop in property value, resale value and purchaser interest?
  • Loss of our view and scenery?
  • Loss of privacy and security?
  • Increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic?
  • Construction noise and disturbance?
  • An increase in theft and trespassing?
  • Overcrowding?
  • Water-drainage issues?
  • Psychological distress and wellbeing?
  • Homeowners moving out of the community?
  • Loss of neighbors and social ties?
  • Inconvenience of lost proximity to a golf course?
  • School overflow and over capacity concerns?

Members and Golfers

Could losing the course lead to:

  • Loss of social connection, recreation and membership?
  • Loss of dues and/or investment?
  • No local programs for juniors who want to pursue golf?
  • Loss of intergenerational connections?
  • Dismantling of a valued venue for events?

Environmental Impact & Ecosystem Destruction

Would destruction of the golf course cause:

  • Destruction of trees and greenery?
  • Destruction of bodies of water and ponds?
  • Disappearance of wildlife habitats?
  • Limited greenspace?
  • Drainage and flooding concerns?
  • Increased pollution and waste?
  • Dust, noise and other construction issues?

Tourism, Travel and City Landmark

Could potential impacts include:

  • Decrease in golf tourism?
  • Less sales to local small businesses?
  • Lack of tournaments and event space bringing people to the community?
  • Destruction of our community heritage and a valued landmark?
  • Decreased interest in Chestermere as a vacation spot or event destination?
  • Decreased interest in moving to the community or purchasing a home here?
  • Elimination of a major outdoor recreation opportunity during COVID-19?

Recreation, Social Connection and Sport

Could losing the golf course mean:

  • Less ability to "age in place" and enjoy a retirement lifestyle?
  • Loss of the "Junior Golf Program" and recreation for kids?
  • A decrease in recreation options in Chestermere?
  • Negative impact on active living and mental well being?

GOOD NEWS AND ACTION ITEM

GREAT NEWS arrived with the release of the new City of Chestermere Municipal Development Plan Final Draft.

For the first time, a special designation for Golf Course Residential Policies 4.4.5 was included.

LGGC Preservation Society feels this is an added layer of protection in our fight against rezoning and development. We are thrilled that our Mayor and Council listened to the hundreds of emails and feedback from our supporters. Together we have (yet again) done something ground breaking that changes the future of Chestermere.
